Vivendo durante os turbulentos reinados de quatro monarcas Tudor, Becon serviu sob a supervis\u00e3o do arcebispo de Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, e comp\u00f4s cerca de cinquenta tratados com in\u00fameras edi\u00e7\u00f5es subsequentes que continuaram a ser impressas setenta anos ap\u00f3s sua morte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seus escritos sobre piedade s\u00e3o relevantes e \u00fateis para todos os crist\u00e3os, especialmente para aqueles que tendem a dividir suas vidas em categorias de &#8220;sagrado&#8221; e &#8220;secular&#8221;. Becon, n\u00e3o reconhecendo tais divis\u00f5es, exortou os crist\u00e3os em sua \u00e9poca a buscar a piedade nos ritmos de suas rotinas di\u00e1rias.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Pastor escondido<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becon, nascido em Thetford, Norfolk, por volta de 1512, foi educado no St. John&#8217;s College em Cambridge, onde ficou profundamente comovido e possivelmente convertido sob os ensinamentos de influ\u00eancia luterana de um de seus professores, Hugh Latimer. Durante esse tempo, Becon produziu v\u00e1rios tratados sob o pseud\u00f4nimo de &#8220;Theodore Basil&#8221; para evitar de ser descoberto pelas autoridades locais. Sob escrut\u00ednio e vigil\u00e2ncia ainda mais pesados dos magistrados locais por ordem de Henrique VIII, Becon fugiu para Midlands da Inglaterra, onde se escondeu por quatro anos nas montanhas sem publicar nenhuma obra.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Ex\u00edlio e regresso ao lar<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quando Eduardo VI, de nove anos, amigo e defensor da Reforma Inglesa, subiu ao trono em 1547, Becon saiu do ex\u00edlio e voltou para Londres, onde foi nomeado capel\u00e3o da corte real. Na mesma \u00e9poca, tornou-se reitor da prestigiosa par\u00f3quia de Londres, St. Stephen Walbrook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Com a ascens\u00e3o de Maria I ao trono em 1553, no entanto, muitos evang\u00e9licos, incluindo Becon, foram presos. Primeiro, a Palavra de Deus, argumentou Becon, era suficiente para todos os crist\u00e3os e era o catalisador da piedade. Becon imaginou uma comunidade inglesa onde \u201cas pessoas podem aprender desde seus ber\u00e7os&#8230; conhecer a Deus, entender sua Palavra, honr\u00e1-lo corretamente e andar em seus caminhos sagrados\u201d (New pollecye of warre).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Em segundo lugar, Becon instruiu os crist\u00e3os a verem suas vidas como um est\u00e1gio cont\u00ednuo de adora\u00e7\u00e3o, onde a piedade estava em exibi\u00e7\u00e3o, mesmo na manh\u00e3 ordin\u00e1ria de segunda-feira. Para Becon, o culto n\u00e3o se limitava \u00e0s reuni\u00f5es dominicais. Nem se limitou a certas disciplinas espirituais, como leitura da B\u00edblia ou ora\u00e7\u00e3o. A adora\u00e7\u00e3o, ao contr\u00e1rio, era uma atividade incessante que deveria tecer seu caminho atrav\u00e9s da liturgia da vida di\u00e1ria: comer refei\u00e7\u00f5es, trabalhar no local de trabalho, passar o tempo de lazer e retirar-se para a cama.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Nenhum trabalho \u00e9 &#8220;secular&#8221;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becon publicou dois manuais de ora\u00e7\u00e3o contendo ora\u00e7\u00f5es modelo para atividades espec\u00edficas da programa\u00e7\u00e3o di\u00e1ria. Um desses manuais apresentava ora\u00e7\u00f5es modelo para aqueles em ocupa\u00e7\u00f5es espec\u00edficas, incluindo magistrados, cl\u00e9rigos, comerciantes, advogados, marinheiros, soldados, m\u00e3es e crian\u00e7as. Becon sustentou que uma ocupa\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o era mais essencial do que outra.
